I'm stepping into 2019, with my keyword being: FOCUS. If you look at my blog categories now, you will notice that I added a new category, WELLNESS. Moving forward on the blog, I really want to talk about more topics around health and wellness. Now these topics won't be your typical "stay healthy" and "get fit" topics, either. I won't bore you with that. Instead, as we age, (and our parents age) I want to really talk about the things that affects our health as African American women.
With statistics that says, "African American women between the ages of 35-44 (my target audience), have increased breast cancer death rate of more than twice the rate of White women in the same age group -- 20.02 deaths per 100,000 compared to 10.2 deaths per 100,000 (www.minoritynurse.com)." This is only one of the reasons why, I want to focus more on health and wellness amongst African American women, moving forward.

Women's health and wellness has consisted of a variety of public health issues such as diabetes, choosing the right contraceptives, HIV/AIDS, cervical cancer, fibroids, low birth rates, high blood pressure, heart disease, strokes, obesity, menstrual cycles and menopause, just to name a few. In this category of blog posts, I want to talk about it all and more.

Of course I am not some health expert or professional. So I will be opening up this platform for contributors who will either have experience in this category, work in the field or want to simply share their knowledge or concerns about a particular topic.

I am committing myself to utilizing my neighborhood park more and focus on building a better and healthier life, by staying physically fit. I am always, behind a desk (or in my bed) typing away on my laptop, producing content which means I don't get out much. I know I eat mostly healthy food but I still need to learn about the wellness of my body overall.
I realized that in order to inspire women in this world, we have to be present, holistically and I am joining in with you to take care of myself better daily. In this new year, I want you to take more time to educate yourself on your health issues, self-care regimens, medicines you're taking, etc. Don't leave the health and wellness of your temple into someone else's hands (ex., doctor). Focus and educate yourself this year.
